beyond the surface
I work mainly with oil paint, soft pastels, and charcoal, choosing each medium for the different ways it helps me shape a mood or feeling.
Oil paint gives me the freedom to build up color, light, and atmosphere, while pastels let me work more directly and intuitively with color.
With charcoal, I strip things back to black and white, focusing on contrast and expression in light and dark.
Across all three, I’m interested in combining realistic details with more expressive, abstract elements, allowing parts of the image to move beyond the literal and into the piece's emotional world.

Oil Paintings
I like to create figurative works in oil that feel real, while letting parts of the painting move beyond realism.
The figures often have a calm presence, and I keep their expressions relatively simple. Around them, I tend to work much more freely.
Through visible brushwork, shifts in color, and more abstract shapes, the surroundings become more dynamic and expressive.
I enjoy the contrast between the calm and the dynamic around it. The realistic elements give the viewer something familiar to connect with, while the more expressive areas leave room for the imagination.
My painting really comes together when the figure feels grounded in reality, but the world around it suggests something a little harder to define.
A New Way of Working
Soft Pastel
I’ve recently started working with soft pastels, and I really enjoy the possibilities they offer in my work. I’m especially drawn to their soft colors and the way I can use them to create moody atmospheres, blurred areas, and more expressive shapes.
It’s still a fairly new medium for me, so I’m curious to see where it takes my work. For now, I’m enjoying experimenting with it and letting new ideas develop naturally.

The charcoal drawings I currently offer focus on figurative portraits and the moods and stories a face or figure can suggest.
There’s something about keeping the image in black and white that leaves room to connect with the figure and imagine their story.
